Frequently Asked Questions

About Gold Silver Ledger

What is Gold Silver Ledger?

Gold Silver Ledger is a precious metals portfolio tracker for physical bullion. It replaces the spreadsheet most collectors start with, giving you live spot prices, item-level inventory, cost basis tracking, performance analytics, and tax-ready reports for gold, silver, platinum, and palladium.

Who is it for?

Anyone who owns physical bullion and wants to know what they hold, what it cost, what it’s worth, and what they owe at tax time. Whether your collection is twenty coins or two thousand, the app scales to fit.

Does it track paper metals, ETFs, or mining stocks?

No. Gold Silver Ledger is built exclusively for physical bullion you own. Coins, bars, rounds, and junk silver. Not ETFs, futures, or mining stocks.

What metals can I track?

Gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. You can hold them all in a single portfolio or split them across multiple portfolios depending on your plan.

Is there a mobile app?

The web app is fully responsive and works on phones and tablets out of the box. A dedicated native app is not currently available, but is on the roadmap.

Can I import data from my existing spreadsheet?

Bulk upload is available on the Premium plan, so you can move an existing spreadsheet over in one go.

Pricing and Plans

How much does Gold Silver Ledger cost?

There are three plans: Starter at $7 per month, Pro at $15 per month, and Premium at $39 per month. Annual billing is also available at a discount.

What's included in each plan?

Starter is for new collectors with up to 30 items in a single portfolio. Pro adds room to 1,000 items across 3 portfolios. Premium offers up to 10,000 items across 10 portfolios, plus tax-ready annual reports, and bulk upload via CSV.

Can I switch plans later?

Yes. You can upgrade or downgrade any time from your account settings.

Do you offer annual billing?

Yes. You can choose monthly or annual at signup, or switch later from your billing portal.

Free Trial

How does the free trial work?

Every monthly plan starts with a 14-day free trial that gives you full access to all the features in that plan. Payment information is provided at sign up. You can cancel at any time during the trial.

If you’re interested in an annual plan, you can sign up for such immediately without a free trial, or you can wait until the end of your trial and update your plan from monthly to annual.

What happens when my trial ends?

On day 15 you’ll be charged the monthly subscription for your chosen plan, unless you canceled during the trial.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. Cancel from your account at any time. You’ll keep access through the end of your current billing period. Also, your data will be retained, in the event you choose to renew at a later date.

Data, Privacy, and Security

Is my data safe?

Yes. Your portfolio data is private to your account and never sold or shared. Payment information is handled entirely by Stripe, so we never see or store credit card details. We also don’t store addresses.

Do you sell my data?

No. We do not sell, share, or rent your portfolio data to anyone.

Can I export my data?

Yes. CSV export is available on every plan. Your data is always yours to take with you.

What happens to my data if I cancel my account?

You can export everything before you cancel. After cancellation, your data is retained briefly in case you come back, and then permanently deleted.

Account and Support

How do I get help?

Articles and walkthroughs live in the help center. All subscribers also get support via email and chat.

Spot Prices

Where do spot prices come from?

Prices come from a professional precious metals data feed and update every minute.

How often do prices update?

Spot prices refresh every 60 seconds during normal market conditions.

What happens if a price feed goes stale?

While issues with price updates are uncommon, if a price is more than 5 minutes old, the app shows the last known value and flags it with a warning, so you always know how fresh your data is.

Inventory and Catalog

What if I have something that's not in the standard catalog?

You can add custom items to your personal catalog with any weight, purity, and metal type. They behave just like the built-in items once added.

Can I track junk silver?

Yes. Pre-1965 US coinage uses face-value-based multipliers rather than standard weight times purity, and these are built into the app for dimes, quarters, half dollars, Morgans, Peace dollars, and 1965 to 1970 Kennedys.

Can I track multiple portfolios?

Yes, on the Pro plan up to 3, and on the Premium plan 10. Useful for separating long-term holdings from trading bullion, or keeping a family member’s collection in its own portfolio.

What happens if a price feed goes stale?

While issues with price updates are uncommon, if a price is more than 5 minutes old, the app shows the last known value and flags it with a warning, so you always know how fresh your data is.

Tax Reports

Does Gold Silver Ledger generate tax reports?

Yes, on the Premium plan. Annual reports calculate capital gains and losses from your sales by tax year, classified as short-term if held under one year or long-term if held one year or more. You can export as CSV and PDF.

Which cost basis methods are supported?

Specific Identification cost basis, which lets you choose exactly which items you sold. It is the most tax-advantageous method for physical bullion collectors and maps naturally to the item-level inventory model.

Are tax reports available outside the US?

Annual reports are designed for US customers at launch. UK, Canadian, and other regional support is on the roadmap.

Currency

What currencies are supported?

Display currencies include USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD, CHF, JPY, NZD, HKD, SGD, MXN, ZAR, SEK, NOK, and DKK. FX rates refresh every 15 minutes.

Will changing my display currency affect my historical data?

No. Values are stored internally in USD and converted at display time. Changing the display currency only changes how values are shown in the interface, never the underlying numbers.
